John,

Some older iron can be pretty funky to deal with. Older Hurcos boot
their OS off of a tape. There is an upgrade available (or was at one
time) that would allow the machine to boot from an add-in board.
From what I've gathered, folks that learn on Hurcos love them. G-code
trained folks don't always take to them. Don't know if you are going to
find a low-end CAM program that will post for a Hurco. One of the main
selling points for Hurco is extreme ease of programming at the control.

If you are going to look at an older machine, look for manuals on
programming, maint. and schematics.
Look for machines with clean paint. Not repainted, but clean original
paint. That in itself doesn't insure anything, but is an indicator that
the machine was either well cared for and/or has low hours.
