Turns out these motors are linear steppers! The guys at Applied
Motion Products nailed it when I referred to them as 'Sawyer
Principle" motors.
The told me bi-polar chopper drives will do the trick.
I will try a gecko first. If not enough current then I will be looking
for some 10-15 amp capable half step drivers.
I will post some test results in a few days.
