The local water jet cutting shop uses a bed of coarse gravel, and places the
material to be cut right on the gravel. They replace the gravel every six
months or so. They originally used a grid over a water tank with two feet
of water in it to stop the jet. They cut holes in the bottom of the tank in
short order. They operate at 50,000 psi, and use ultrapure water. The high
pressure pump is very elaborate, and I believe is driven by a 40 or 50 HP
motor. They make no attempt to recover the abrasive, or recycle the water.
