The way I normally do the subroutines is quite similar to what you describe.
I make a "master" part of the program that does all the prelim stuff like
resetting the origins, starting the spindle etc. then call a subroutine for
positioning, that subroutine then traverses the machine to the required
co-ordinates for the part and then I call the contouring or "cutting"
subroutine. If I can write the "cutting" subroutine in script it would not
be a big problem to forego the positioning subroutine and just reset each
origin and call the script. Sounds like that might work just fine.
