Bill:
The only problem with the fault signal is that it gives what I call false
outputs a lot and stops the program when it should not, requiring the
operator to be at the ready to restart the program. At least that is what I
have found out with the StarCam boards, maybe the Gecko drives are better
and
you won't have that problem. Something that many do not know is that in an
industrial environment where there are more than one automated machine being
used, there is often one operator for 2 or 3 machines. Since you don't get
that feedback with a true stepper system I have just left those disconnected
for now until I find a better way to do it so that it runs more or less like
it was a stepper system.
Of course, the optimal would be a software program, inexpensive of course,
that would interface with a true, relatively low cost, motion control board
or card and allow the direct control of the servo drives and the reading and
processing of the encoder signals. I am doing a more detailed evaluation of
the EMC software which someone told me would do that. The only problem I
run
into is my customers that want to be able to access reports, etc. thru
windows and then go back to the CNC control mode to run the machine for the
next production run. I am starting to learn Linux, which isn't too hard
since I have used Unix a long time ago on some mainframe systems. I like
Linux but am having a hard time selling the concept to the end users.
MicroSoft has done a good marketing job on Windoz and even DOS.
