I don't think that you are missing anything. Not many stepper systems have
encoders. The main advantage that some of my customers would like is a way
for the system to know if the bit ran into an object and stalled during
unattended operation. I have one customer who runs his cnc router all night
(unattended) doing some complex wood carving. He wishes that he had
steppers with encoders.
