We have already been beat to creating a new time. Swatch (the watch people)
have a standard they call internet time. It even dispenses with time zones.
Here is a piece from their website:
INTERNET TIME
an innovative, new unit of time, measured in units called ".beats" and
created by Swatch, allows for no time zones, no geographical borders and
more freedom
Internet Time divides up the virtual and real day into 1000 ".beats". One
Swatch .beat is the equivalent of 1 minute 26.4 seconds. BMT or Biel Mean
Time is the universal reference for Internet Time via the creation of a new
meridian located in Biel, Switzerland, the home and Headquarters of Swatch.
A day in Internet Time begins at @000 Swatch .beats BMT (midnight UTC+1),
which means that 12 noon in the current time system (UTC+1) is equivalent to
@500 Swatch .beats.
Internet time was founded on the 23rd of October 1998. For more information,
check out the Internet Time section.
