Todd, My son is doing the same thing, and we are having trouble with
electrical noise when the torch turns on and off. It was worse before we
removed the limit switch wiring from the laptop to the limit switches.
We are using a Century plasma cutter which has the hypotherm torch, so it
should be new enough technology, but we are having two problems. The motion
is very jerky using Dennis's program, Supertech, and 100 line encoders. I
am not saying the problem is Supertech's as I do not think it is, but we are
having problems with our configuration.
The encoder wiring is shielded at the gecko drives, and all grounds are
common. The PC does not even need to be hooked up to make the servo motors
(320's ) jump when the torch is turned off and on. We have a steel cover
over all of the drive electronics. The plasma table is similar to the
configuration that Plasma Cam uses.
We ought to stay in touch to see how things develop.
A long time ago I built a big plasma cutting table to cut 5/8" steel, and I
had a dreadful time getting rid of the electrical noise. I finally got rid
of the problem when I built a water trough under the torch so that while
cutting the dirt, noise and smoke was dissipated into the water. I also had
to cover everything that had electronics in it with steel, and keep the PC
keyboard in the next room. I finally got rid of the plasma cutter itself
because it used a spark gap scheme to generate the high voltage arc at the
torch. The arc was arcing as long as we cut.
Keep in touch
