Another acquisition was a Vintage ('66 I think) Jiffy Metal
Disintegrator. This is an old tap burner, that consists of a
vibrating head you hold in a drill chuck, a power supply, and collant
pump. The head vibrates at 60 HZ, and holds a hollow Molybdenum
electrode. The coolant flows through the electrode, to flush away
chips. There are large welding cables for connecting to the work,
and the head. There is a control for head vibration level, and one
for voltage.
On the whole, a controlled welder for tap burning. It was only
$15, and I figured the large transformer would be worth having for a
power supply at a minimum, but it seems the whole unit, sans the
coolant pump motor, work fine. It even has the whole size range of
moly electrodes.
Has anyone used one of these things? It would probably work even
better with CNC downfeed control, VS an arm on a quill handle, that
is, if they worked OK before.
