CNC lathe designs / horizontal miller

There was talk a short while ago about building a HMM (horizontal
milling machine). Stick a chuck and a longer bed on it, and it
looks a lathe.... or make a lathe's head move up and down and
you get a HMM.
The basis for such a combo machine would seem to be: finding
a way to attach a vertical perpendicular column (upon which
the spindle/chuck raises and lowers) to a long horizontal slide
upon which the carriage (aka milling table) travels.
I've always thought building such a machine would be nice.
Maybe once 'Smoke' perfects casting 400 lb slabs we can
put our heads together on such a project.
