Thank you Ron for your comments about setting up resolv.conf
I tried it, along with several other files and rc.conf parameters, without
success. Then I switched from using kppp to wvdial - success - I can now
access the internet and use ftp to download the emc software.

Question- one that has probably been asked before, can I use the Linux 2.2.7
kernel, or must I use 2.0.36 ?
If I can use 2.2.7 what, if any changes need to be made to the make scripts ?
