I didn't have a chance to reply on this previously, but I would second the
comments that a machine sized to give the milling envelope you outlined is a
pretty big machine indeed. My Shoptask has a milling envelope of about 11" X
9" X 3" and it is probably a 500 lbs machine and not the worlds most rigid
mill. What you are describing will run closer to being a full size
Bridgeport machine. Certainly doable, but one heck of a project to get
started with. The only approach that would seem to make it more of a
hobbyist project would be to build a gantry mill, but that may not have the
rigidity you are looking for.
