NAMES Runoff

Those of us fortunate enough to attend NAMES this year had a very rare
experience on Sunday afternoon. We were able to see the same program
running on several controllers and machines, simultaneously. There were
Sherline CNC mills with Flashcut, Ahha, and EMC all running the same program
at the same TIME! It was a program that cuts a 3D arc, rotated at 20
degrees to the normal, interpolated into 3D lines, and repeated enough times
to get a very good impression of the continuous contouring capability in 3D.
Besides the 3 Sherline flavors, Roland had a Grizzly Mill with his
controller from Cardinal Engineering, and Ray also got the program running
on the "Hexapod-gravity induced-milling contraption, run with EMC". All
systems could run the program. Ahha cut each line with ramping and was a
poor performer, Flashcut cut with some stepping, but was able to be smoothed
out with adjustment to the feed rates, both the EMC and Roland's machines
were very smooth and performed as well with the complex 3D moves, as with 2d
flat planar cutting.
