Good question and a fun way to start.
All you need is a switch to control the direction and a quick little circuit
with a 555 timer to act as the step generator. Probably take less then $3.00
in parts for the "controller". You will still need the stepper driver (Gecko
G201/G210, Camtronics 5 amp or 2 amp, L297/298 based unit, etc) and a power
supply, just no computer. When you decide to go full CNC you can just remove
the circuit and hook the computer in it's place.
