Peter,

There are a number of programs that will look at the gray scale value (1 to
256) and set a different Z depth for each level. Kern lasers is using
Cimagrafi to set the different power levels for their lasers. For them it
works great.

What you are looking for would be a great application for a VBA program.
Programs like Corel Draw have VBA support.
