Just to clarify a couple of points on this thread, yes compucut is a
unipolar stepper driver, using resistive current limit. yes it will drive 3
single stack size 34 motors at once. We use the RS 440 - 464 motor on many
of our demo machines because of its modest price, and adaquate torque 1.2NM
is enough drive on the handweels for most bench size machine jobs. We use
the double stack 34 RS 440 - 470 at 2.2NM for driving the cutter head
(screwcutting etc). The compucut interface can drive larger motors, our
largest "triple" size 34 motor gives 7NM but here the speed under compucut
is very slow.
Yes bipolar drives are much quicker and work the motor harder, I have
several myself, gecko, and alzanti, both make supurb units, but they are
more expensive, and do need interfacing to your PC. Compucut does not
require any electronics knowledge to get up and running, and is promoted
as an introductory solution.
No the software does not use G codes. The compucut program is not amazingly
visual on the screen, but does have a large command set of easilly used
functions giving you control of the machining sequence.

All of the jobs on the website and user forum were produced with compucut.

The website offers many possible combinations for building machines based
on the cheap chineese castings mentioned earlier on the list, worth a look
regardless of your drives and software.

cheers
