People assume that calculus is hard because the problems they had in
school involved a lot of messy algebra. But the actual principals are
trivial, and the problems you will encounter in real life are either
dead simple, or so hard that you simply ask the computer to
approximate things for you.
Ask your professor friend to show you how to differentiate a
polynomial. Have him show you what it looks like graphically. I
think you'll find it far easier to understand than the analytic
geometry text. Textbooks are in my opinion a waste of time and money,
as the first thing you have to do is learn to ignore 90% of what they
say in order to extract the basic info. A good teacher is far, far,
better.
