I have, tentatively at least, set up the "home position" to put the
longest tool 1" above the work. Then everything needs a G01 Z-n.nn to
get into harms way. Its not fool proof, certainly not Fitch-Proof,
but it is closer than putting zero on the work surface for the
shortest tool - which I did exactly once, following which I did some
... uh ... kinesthetic learning.

I believe that statement will stand for ever as one of the basic
machining truths.
