I assert, NO. I built some home-brew drivers, including
professionally-etched and plated-through unipolar driver-PCB's a few years
back, when bipolar was still beyond my $cope, but now, I assert it is
CHEAPER, in the long run, to BUY professionally-made drivers such as Gecko or
even Superior Electric designs. I have used two rather-ambitious "boxes" by
S.E. with built-in power-supply and DUAL drivers, and they function
excellently! I just got confirmation from Gecko that my order for two of
their G210's is on the way, but I do not yet have any experience with those.
However, I saw one at a club-meeting here, and I could not BEGIN to build
something as professionally-nice and "high-spec." for that price! You would
surely pay at least their price for parts, alone, not counting what it'd cost
you to come up with decent PCB's to mount it all on, and you'd have to have
an enclosure and heat-sink and all that, so, it would be an ugly kludge when
you were done! BUY! That's what the world is all about!

I remember, it was [deleted] back then, but a little experience, and there
you have it!
