Turcite ways and bedway wipers

Dear George Brandau and friends,
Last night I finished to repair the next transversal carriage
of a CNC lathe. George thank you very much for your indications
how to repair turcite bed ways and for the tip of the Kabelschlepp
BAS18 way wipers. They are great to work with.

It is incredible how very small design issues have a great influence
in the life of a machine. All differences between this sister machine
(8 years while the first one is now 10 and I had to rebuild it
completely 2 years ago and the transversal X axis 2 month ago)
and this one are:

* the cover of the servo motor has no steps but has angles on the
sides so that the chips don't deposit and cannot fall into
the dove tail guides.
* the chip cover of the slide has wiper to wipe of the chips that
deposit on the cover of the servo motor.
* the other side's accordion cover has the static cover closer
to the cover
* the lateral sides of the slide have sheet metal shields, so that
no chips and soluble oil can get into the slide surfaces.

In résumé in this lathe all the ways were in nearly perfect condition.
All I had to do was to glue the piece of turcite that came loose onto
the base again. Pick out the very small chip particles (ca. 50) and
only four larger chips.
Rectify the flat parts and scrape the dovetail parts.

As with the other machine I closed the original lubrication
grooves with the adhesive, because they led the oil directly
out of the way. (and to avoid that chips get catched in the grooves.
Here again the straight distribution groove was made longer
by a caught chip. )
Engraved zick zack grooves only on the part that never slides
out of the bed way. Put felt and way wipers on both sides of the
bed way. The Kabelschlepp wipers are great to work with. You cut and
mill to size, debure, grind of the overstanding PU profile, drill
and mount. Fast and clean job, no comparison to the old wipers.

George, now I understand why you say that the aluminium profile
of the way wipers in some cases does corrode. The anodizing is very
thin so when you work with alkaline (basic) flood or cleaners
the aluminium gets attacked.
Best wishes to everybody.
Sven Peter
