EMC from the BDI looks the same as it does from any other install. The GUI
is not specific to BDI. TKEMC is the most common front end to use now with
XEMC being the second in line.

Regarding using the encoders like a DRO, it depends. First, remember that
you drive G3X0's as a stepper so you are not using the servo functions of
EMC. As a stepper there are 3 different motion modules: steppermod, freqmod,
and smdromod. With the first 2 are open loop stepper modules and don't know
anything about the physical encoders. Steppermod is totally encoder ignorant
and freqmod is actually reading a virtual encoder so that will not help
either, but smdromod is a closed loop stepper driver and reads the encoders
through one of the Mauch/Kulaga DRO cards that Camtronics sells. If you use
this module and set the display to actual instead of commanded you will be
able to use EMC as a DRO when the servos are de-energized. Only problem I
can see as a possibility is that you may get a follow error unless you set
the allows follow errors REAL high.
