I pretty much have to agree with Jon, with a couple of caveats. I had
to repair an X scale on an older DRO for around $350. I'm pretty
happy with it, but I don't use the mill every day. The control is
pretty basic though, with only position readouts.

Considering my level of use, I'd probably do it again. It's not a big
deal for me to calculate a bolt circle with a calculator. But, this is a
hobby for me and part of the fun is to do things on the cheap. On the
other hand, somebody who uses it more than I do might well consider it
a good investment to spend the extra money to get the extra features.

You have to weigh the cost/benefits for your own situation.
