Hello Jon.
I fooled around now 2 days with this ruler I was talking about.
So my conclusion is:

1. you can not rely 100% on new granite plate.
2. The granite plate must be at least as big as the straight edge.
3. You need for a good reliable job at least 3 pairs of surfaces you match
intermitent.
4. You can apply the Harley-Davidson or Friedel Muench principle to straping:
"you can only substitute cubic by more cubik!" which turns out like: "You
can substitute surface area only by more flat surface area!!!"

Hope this gives you an idea. The ruler I was talking about was worse than
what I had to check.
