Yes, you should. You need to check the Linux hardware compatibility list for each
board in the computer, though. maybe if you ask for a Linux certified machine, there
will be no trouble. Make sure it has a parallel port.

Model? You mean have someone give you all the parameters you need for a
specific motor/leadscrew/etc. ? Yes, I'm sure someone could help with that.

Many programs? Do you mean many part (toolpath) programs? Yes, of course.
EMC does not take over the entire computer. It is still running the Linux operating
system, and has all the capabilities available - networking, file system, windowing, etc.
Or, if you mean a setup for different cutting/grinding machines, yes, you can do that, too.

You can't use the parallel port for encoder feedback. There is the "Dan Mauch" DRO
card, which can be used with steppers, too, or my Parallel Port Axis Control boards,
