While it is possible someone was running a scam, a very common activity
of local linux user groups, of which an amazing number exist, is an
"installfest". These are days devoted to helping new users get a working
system. I know the New Hampshire LUG does this about every other month.
Look at the usenet grouop for comp.linux.announce There will likely be
events like this all over the world.
Note also that almost all major computer companies- IBM, Compaq, Dell,
etc offer pre-installed linux systems. Of course, these will leave you
with the EMC part of the install which is harder than the linux part.
I heard at a recent meeting that one of those vendors now figures over
15% of the server class systems sold are for linux.
