We used a 10 turn Pot. in a system with a thin cable wrapped around a drum in
a bakery. According to the PLC control is was down around 1-2 thousands.
The junk positioning system had a repeatability of 1/8-1/4. There were no
guides, just a big chain drive, racks were free to move in any direction. I
thought about setting up a system like that, but a DRO feel into my lap at an
auction.
There is a company in England that has this type of system, and they claim
.001 inch.
