Yes, that was the article... And six or seven years ago it might have made sense top try to make an encoder from a stepper. Time marches on, things change... NOW encoders are SO available surplus and even new they are so inexpensive (US Digital) as to make sucvh effort only worth the mental exercise, IMO.
