Note that WinZip won't catch any errors with Tar/GZip, and lacks any
corruption handling routines when it comes to the later.

If you're looking to learn UNIX while you still use Windows,
consider installing Cygwin:
http://sources.redhat.com/cygwin/

You download (and update) via the small "setup.exe" which handles
all the program downloads (based on your selections) and
installation automatically.

It will give you a full UNIX CLI (command line interface),
utilities/programs, compilers/development tools, etc... All
programs are direct ports of their UNIX counterparts so they are
fully featured and "up-to-date." Cygnus does this by introducing a
"compatibility layer" via DLL, so they run like if they were on a
UNIX box.

Just FYI ... Several non-UNIX types have found it very useful.
