Linux turned 10 years old yesterday. It was actually in development
in early 1991 as University of Helsinki (Finland) freshman Linus
Torvalds poured over the Intel 386/MMU spec books. The first
"public" release, version 0.01, was announced by Linus on the UseNet
newsgroup comp.os.minix on August 25, 1991. The original name was
Freeix (?), but eventually the name "Linux" (pronounced "LEENOOKS"
by Linus himself, but long or short "I" and "NUCKS" are perfectly
acceptable pronunciations as well) was coined as it quickly became
known as "Linus' little UNIX." The rest is history.
