Any metal is weldable, it just depends how much your willing to pay up,
including cast iron. If it's non -magnetic I agree you should check to see
if it's aluminium or an alloy of it. Just grab some caustic soda and
dissolve something like a few teaspoons with as _little_ water as possible
(So it's VERY strong, mind your skin and eyes, it will burn you). Dribble
some of that onto the metal and watch it. If the metal bubbles fairly
quickly it's aluminium of some sort most probably. Make sure to wash it off
straight after with lots and lots of water because it's very corrosive. Give
it a scrap with something sharp and see what happens.

I think sintering leaves a crystal like pattern in metal as well doesn't it?
Or atleast granular. If it's cast iron or aluminium you'll need buck loads
of pre-heat. Try a jacket boiler repair shop, if there are anymore jacket
style boiler repair places around. Ours was replaced with one of the new
energy efficient exchanger types. All I know if that the shower bearly works
and the house is either desert or artic temperatures, there is no
in-between.
