I recall mentioning the wire switching technique regarding my DreamMachines.
I have a lot of axis on them. The projects I have in mind would sometimes
require one set of axis and sometimes a completly different set. My
solution was to use a set of controllers (say 6 or 8 as required) and
connect them all to switches on a control panel. This would allow me to
desigante and operate any axis in any manner I might choose. In fact, I
could even set up the control panel to operate more than one machine.

Needless to say, I got a lot of static about doing things this way...even to
the point where someone said it wouldn't work. However, since I've had
experience with similar controls on conveyor machinery, I do know it will
work. So...when I get to the build point where I'm hooking them up, you can
be sure I'll be "I'll listen to my drummer and doing it MY way".
