EMC will drive any stepper controller that uses step and direction
signals. It also has the ability to do phase type controllers, but I
believe this code is somewhat specific to the phase signals used by
older Bridgeport Boss systems. So to be safe I would stick with step and
direction type drives (that is what most drives are today anyways).

Now regarding building your own. If you want to take the easy way out go
with a kit like the 2 and 5 amp bipolar choppers by Camtronics (
http://www.seanet.com/~dmauch/ ) . If you want to design your own look
at the L297/L298 chips by ST Microelectronics. It is relatively simple
in concept, but can be fickle to board layout. Another way to go would
be to use an EDE1204 chip from ( http://www.elabinc.com ) and combine it
with an appropriate H bridge. I would actually suggest just buying a set
of Gecko ( http://www.geckodrive.com ) G210a microstep drives. They are
already built and proven so you eliminate the problem of trying to
figure out if you have a software, hardware, or electronics problem. At
$129 per axis they are a bargain for their capability and they will run
pretty much any sized motor that you would use on a machine tool.
