general machine questions

Hello:

1) A while back I asked if anyone knew anything about a Graham Variable
Speed Transmission.

I have since gotten some info, and there is a part on it I would like to
replace, but the mfr. no longer has 'em. I am wondering if anyone has seen
something like this in your years of experience...

I don't know the official term for it, but it's a clear tube that shows oil
level in the transmission. It's badly yellowed (plastic I suppose).

Maybe this is a pretty normal alternative to a dipstick.

2) Since I don't have machining capabilities (I lurk here to learn
motor/drive information), I thought there might be someone on the list who
might be able to help me by making a couple parts I need (for $ of course).
I imagine there will be a gamut of skills and hourly rates...some of you
might be professionals, some hobbyists, some overqualified, some not.

I am trying to modify the capabilities of a machine I have...originally
different "tooling" or fixtures were selected to configure the machine for a
specific size range of product. The manufacturer is long out of business and
it has been suggested to me I will need a machinist friend to keep this
thing running. I have found two places that still have some stuff for these,
but they don't want to start parting it out - good deal if I take 7 complete
machines, but my garage and credit card won't tolerate that.

I'll be taking photos and trying to specify what changes I need to adapt my
existing tooling.

Any suggestions as to how to make a connection with someone would be
appreciated.

I'm guessing I post pictures on my web site with a description and
measurements of what I have and what I need, invite list members to take a
peek, and other than taking up a little bandwidth for messages, only
interested parties would make the effort to get involved.

I'm sure there are commercial machinists locally too, but I'm still kind of
in the dark about who to approach...someone might have the ideal skills and
equipment, but not have time for small job, others might have minimum setup
charge...I though this might be a good place to start.
