By the time you realize that the motors are missing steps, you've most
likely ruined your part. Thus, you try to find the reason WHY it missed
those steps and fix that problem. Your problems could be -

1. New binding in the mechanism - often the case when everything has worked
properly for a long time before.

2. Running too fast - Stepper motors lose torque as their speed is
increased. If this is the case, slow it down.

3. Taking too much metal off - Reduce the feed rates, depth of cut, etc.

4. Stepper capability is "too small" for the machine. Try to find higher
capacity motors to fit the current mounting scheme.
