You can with some brands. The calipers with the 5 pin ports have a request
line that can be pulled low.

I am using the caliper on a special piece of equipment. I wanted to use it
to capture a snapshot position at a certain point in time.

I can do that, sort of. What I'll do it time the motion so that I get the
sample at the right time. I've got the same sort of caliper. How are you
reading yours ? I've run the clock and data streams into the parallel port
of a PC. Whenever I see the clock high, I read the data bit. It is a bit
tedious, but it works. I was going to use a PIC, but this works too, or
almost works: I've got a few glitches to take care of.
