You can with some brands. The calipers with the 5 pin ports have a request
line that can be pulled low.

I am using the caliper on a special piece of equipment. I wanted to use it
to capture a snapshot position at a certain point in time.

sample at the right time. I've got the same sort of caliper. How are you
