Caliper to PC interface

Hi people.

I am (trying to) interface a no name (offshore) electronic caliper to a PC. This caliper has the 4 wire interface: GND, PWR, Clock and Data.

I've got a few things worked out, but not everything. The BIG question I have is how do I ask the caliper for data ? If I have it hooked up to the PC and I want to capture position data in real time, how does/can the PC control WHEN the data is sent ?

Please excuse me/ point me in the right direction if this question is answered in a FAQ somewhere or has been recently discussed.
