Here is the difference

The 2 guys you mention are regular supports of the list and answer questions
when they come up even if they do not pertain to their products. This guy
joined the list and did not even introduce himself, but just posted a piece
of spam (ok it was interestig enough that I requested the catalog, but still
spam). It comes down to intent. If the intent is to use the list as a medium
to deliver ads then it is not acceptable. It the intent is to be a citizen
of the list and just happen to mention your product and service when it fits
the question then it is acceptable.

So, if you want to sell things, the best way to approach it is to post
actively (be a good resource) and slip in a mention of your product as often
as possible. Kind of like the difference between ads on tv where you accept
them because they are part of receiving the show you enjoy and getting a
telemarketing call where there is no value being given to you.
