I read with interest the comments on the Newell measuring equipment, Last
Thursday at the Midlands Model Engineering show there was I understand some
of it on show at the Chester UK company stand at about £600 ?? inc our VAT
tax payable by UK residents per set, I understand it works on the same
principals. The Newell business is now owned as I understand it by
Keithley Machine Tools Ltd
130 Kingsway
Ossett
WF5 9HY

If this proves unable to answer your queries the British Patent Office maybe
able to help, they must I am sure have a site somewhere.
As a young and innocent lad may I ask a question. How many of you if your
pursuit of accuracy proves a winner can make use of the figures it provides?
Can you sharpen a drill so that it will exactly cut on size? How much slack
have you in you table movements and is it constant? Does your tool move in a
true plane, etc., etc. Is your workshop kept at a constant temperature,
humidity and safeguarded against vibration? And finally does it really
matter? Most professional parts are provided with tolerances for the parts to
be within on their various dimensions.
I would not argue that in the past the use of closer tolerances has not aid
both manufacturer and user, ask anyone who rode an oil dripping 1960's Brit
built motorcycle and then tried one from the far east how they felt about the
change, but the constant chasing of figures to the right of a decimal point
can be taken to unneeded extremes and end up merely costing money.
