I suspect the overshoot can be delt with by adjusting the acceleration
parameters in the controller. I've done no more than this with mine and
it works well half step.

I converted to ball screws (Rockford) right off for decreased backlash.
The decreased drag has caused no problems with CNC. However, my hands
still need some calibration, they are used to the acme lead screws and
tend to put too much torque into the ball screws under manual operation.
