Hi,
If you mean store bought threaded rod? The 1/4-20 rod
works great with hobby steppers. I use 1/4-20 rod in my
homemade milling machine. I mill circuit boards. I used
to use PVC block for the driven nut, now I use Delrin. My
machine moves at 12" per minute. I mill circuit boards
at 6" per minute. For more info check out:

John makes all his machines using hardware store parts.
He has helped me build mine. He and I both sell mechanically
etched circuit boards.
