I have received a couple of these messages as well (on other groups as well).
I find that they are *not* being sent via Yahoo. Unfortunately, I not longer
have the "Franz de Beer's message", if I ever even received it, but the
following was my experience with a virus-infected message I recently received on
another group:
Instead of the mail being sent
To: GroupName@yahoogroups.com
From: one of the group members
which is the normal case for group messages,
it was instead sent directly
To: myself
From: one of the group members with an _ in front of the e-mail address.
It happens that I have rules set up in my e-mail program (Outlook 2000
(9.0.0.2711)) to move messages containing [GroupName] in their subject line to a
special folder, so any message sent directly to me personally with this in the
subject line gets tossed in with the group messages. I should fix this someday
to avoid confusing personal and group messages...
I suspect other users might have similar rules set up.
What the virus does is pick a subject line from a message on the Victim's
system, and sends it to senders of messages in that user's mailbox.
In other words, because the infected computer happens to have a message from
this group, and also happens to have a message written by myself (most likely
delivered via this group) means that I get a message sent to me directly, with
the subject set so that my rules put it in the group's folder, making it look at
first glance like a regular message from the group. Yahoo is not involved other
than being the legitimate deliverer of the messages whence the virus derives its
data.
Not only should one not shoot the messenger who brings bad news, but also one
should not shoot the (previous) messenger who delivered the stationery :-)
