Hi Alan:
A good preliminary test is to tell your motors to turn very slowly. Even
if your current is too low, or voltage is too low, you will normally have
lots of power when going slow. Does your motor click forward, then back,
when you do this? This would indicate a defective wiring on one phase. Does
this loss of power only happen when you go fast? This would indicate a
current which is too low. The SP3 kit is a little underpowered for larger
motors, but should work fine for lower ones. 150 oz/in is about the max you
would wish to drive with it. All stepper motors will show the symptoms you
describe if you try to go too fast for the motor's power conditions. Is it
better in one direction than the other? , this can indicate that you are
pulseing the controller with the wrong polarity signal (Though most
controllers are mostly unaffected by this). The problem your having is not
uncommon and I have had questions on it from many different people over the
past year, most with different solutions. Send us some more information and
I'm sure someone here can help solve the mystery.
