Motor and encoder mounting questions

Hello:
These may have been answered previously...sorry if it's a recent repeat...
1)
I need to mount a NEMA 42 motor (square NEMA mount) with a pulley for a belt
drive application. The motor is about 8" long and about 25 pounds.
How heavy a bracket should I use? I am visualizing a thick L-bracket, or
maybe a cutoff piece of I-beam.
2) I bought an Allen-Bradley rotary incremental encoder on ebay - I think a
'25' size. Maybe 20...1.75" square hole pattern if I remember. It will have
a 1 foot circumference measurement wheel mounted on it - very low force on
it, used for small gauge wire footage measurement, so I'm tempted to make
the crudest bracket with a hand drill and a piece of sheet metal.
Or, does an L-bracket type mount for this exist that anyone has surplus to
their needs?
I guess same question as to availability applies to the beast motor, too.
Thanks
Murray
