You'll do yourself a great favor if you call up a local machine shop,
explain you situation and ask if you can take a look at one of their CNC
mills... ask if you can go in after hours, chances are their maintenance
people will be still be there so you won't be "unsupervised" and you also
won't be interfering with their production schedule.
Tell them you are working on a school project and would like to take
some pictures and measurements of their CNC mills. You'll get further in
twenty minutes of hands-on inspection than you will in two weeks of internet
research. Just look in the yellow pages under "machine shops". If you can
manage to talk to an owner or supervisor, you'll get much further than if
you put in this request to a secretary.
