Well, I know about this, as I blew away 6 months of email a couple weeks ago
when my home machine crashed after a 70-day run (red Hat 5.2) I also ended
up with a kernel that wouldn't boot on my machine at work with Mandrake 8.1
after a crash while trying to fix a print spooler difficulty. That one I never

figured out how to get a standard kernel to boot on, so I FTP'd all my files
off to another machine and then formatted the root partition and reloaded.
Ugh! That took a long time to straighten out.

I am now copying the mail file every once in a while to a safe place.
