In the welding section of our shop, we have thermal sensors instead of
smoke detectors. I doubt they would react fast enough to save the equipment
but I'm sure it would save lives. Smoke detectors will go off with burning
toast. I don't know if the thermal probes are still (seems fire code is
getting stiffer and stiffer) covered by Factory Mutual or UL but I have not
seen them being installed in quite a while. You should check with your Fire
Marshal if this is a place of business.

BTW, I think they are set to go off at 165 degrees F.
