Hello Wally,
Depending on my personnel experience with grandfather GE 550
controls often you can go wire by wire looking for the failure.
But only if you have full documentation.
And after a few days you sit again in that monster box which
eats more electric bill then the spindle.
Meanwhile I wouldn't waste my time any more with an outdated
control and by a standard PC.
But first check out if driver and motors are OK and only the
control is shot.
Most times I have seen that is the case. Then it could be a good
change to mount a PC some interface cards and install EMC.

If one of the drivers is shot then check check first the
output stage which love to toast the power transistors
(triacs or whatever they are called).
As driver replacement here in the group mostly Geckos are
mentioned.
