Group,

I've purchased over 15 Yaskawa Vfd's over the years. Almost all are of the
PC-7 series. These were sold by EMS, Magnetek, Saftronics to name a few. The
first few I purchased, I though I had to have the keypad to operate the
VFD's. I found that is not the case. After programming operational
parameters, the keypad can be removed to either program the next VFD or
stored on a shelf. The actual control is usually done by a CNC, a PLC or an
external set of manual control buttons. If you really wanted to, you could
operate a VFD via the programming keypad but this would put in harms way an
expensive item.

I've looked at Mitsubishi and Hitachi VFD's on the shelf and recall they
have a very similar setup whereby the keypad can be removed also. AC TECH's
VFDs have a semi permanent keypad, I think GE's units had remaval keypads
too.

If you can settle on a particular series of VFD's, then you can buy new or
surplus units minus keypad once you have one.
