May I second Ray,
It is one thing to give notices of what you do on the machine up to the
office. And I would even support a password protected liberation of
critical work operation. (for example on certain parts that the
machinist
cannot start until the engineer gave green light after visual inspection
of the set up - This is something I fought for in certain factory where
I was the quality assurance guy.)
But I wouldn't permit at all risk somebody remote to hack into machine
operation or plc-progam.
In certain PLC's (I will try to sell soon) the main benefit is to make
maintenance via modem in air-condition systems. But it will not affect
the
personnel safety of an operator. While on a tool machine the operator's
safety will be seriously affected. Only an emergency stop may be
operated via the net work.
