Software to Controler compatability?

I am building a tangential kife cutting machine, so far I just
ordered
linear bearings and housings that I found surplus in the US. I am
looking at a CNC system that is offered by a CNC retrofit company in
Woolongong. They have a developed a servo controller that runs on
step
and direction signals. This seems an afordable way for me to go at
present. Though If I really knew my electronics - which I don't, and
thats the problem - I would try for some more surplus gear that seems
relatively cheap for this backyard builder.

Thanks to all who helped with my enquirees on software
for running a tangential blade machine I am building I have a good
start I think with DANCAM as a free start and Professional sign
making
software to look at for serious work.

So, I can get my head around most aspects af the cnc machine but am
pretty hazy re issues around the compatability of cam software,
machine software, controllers servo amps and motors.

For instance Cadlink Profilre lab outputs in HPGL direct to
controllers? So you need controlers that understand HPGL as opposed
to
G Code?

Ideally I would like to start trialing my machine with
the old DANCAM shareware which I already have and then upgrade to
professional software when my machine is working and will be ready to
generate some income for me. But again I am concerned about
compatability problems.

If any one can help to clear the air on this area or
point me in the direction of some tech info site or something like
'CNC for Dummies' !

I would be most grateful.

Peter Uhd
